Sonography (Ultrasound)
Sonography is the most commonly used diagnostic imaging technique. An important advantage of ultrasound compared to X-ray is the harmlessness of the sound waves. Sensitive tissue such as organs of an unborn baby are not damaged by ultrasound, and the examination is painless.Using ultrasound, physicians can detect potentially cancerous centers and gain an initial indication of their potential malignancy. Moreover, it is the most important procedure in the diagnosis of acute abdominal disease, gallstones, and in the assessment of vascular permeability, especially in the legs. Furthermore, ultrasound is routinely used to examine the thyroid, the heart – called echocardiography – the kidneys, the urinary tract, and the bladder. If appropriate, the use of contrast agents can further improve the quality of the diagnosis.
